Who is your publisher and how can I submit my work to them?
I am published with Winter Goose Publishing (Sacramento, Ca.). For information on submitting your work to WGP, please visit their submissions page.
Have you always been a writer? What/who was your biggest influence in becoming one?
I have written (and loved writing) since I was young. It wasn’t until I started sharing my work online (via blogging and a wonderful poetry sharing site called AllPoetry) that I decided I wanted to pursue the craft professionally. My biggest influences have been other writers. Reading different styles of work helped me find and cultivate my own voice.
What inspires you to write?
I am inspired by everything. Nature, people, photography, a drive with the windows down, other writers…my head is in a constant whirl. I absorb everything from conversations with friends and family to the actions of strangers in passing. I can find a poem/story anywhere. It’s insane.
What has been the most exciting part of being a published author?
First and foremost, the fact that getting published has allowed me to share my work with so many people when there was a time I was terrified to let anyone read anything I wrote because my work is so personal. And then there was finding out that The Band Perry (fellow Tennesseans) followed me on Twitter. The lead singer, Kimberly Perry, writes poetry and just the thought that she may have read something of mine was pretty awesome.
Can you give me your personal advice/tips on writing?
See my ‘On Writing’ article.
What advice would you give to a new author trying to get their book published?
This question is most always answered the same. Read. Read. Read. But you cannot forget that you must also Write. Write. Write. A lot. This is just my opinion, but the more you write, the more comfortable you become with your pen and that will help you most in finding out what flows easiest for you, then you can begin to tune your voice. Then finally: Submit. Submit. Submit.
Do you have any upcoming writing projects?
Currently, I’m working on my first full length novel (follow my journey here) with my amazing writing coach, Rebecca T. Dickson. I hope to have it completed and ready for release by mid 2014. In the meantime, stay tuned for two more collected works. ‘Candy from Strangers’, a collection of short stories. And ‘Summer’s Spell’, a new collection of prose & poetry.
